How to Make Your Own Windsocks, Whirligigs and Wind Chimes

Now that the nice weather is here you’re probably thinking outdoors and gardening. Why not decorate your outdoor space with some handmade windsocks, whirligigs, and wind chimes? Here are some tutorials for making these fun crafts for your yard this year.
How to Make a Windsock

Making your own windsock is a simple craft. You only need a few basic things and a little creativity.

Here’s what you need…

* Construction paper
* Tissue paper
* Glue
* Scissors
* String
* Markers, crayons, stamps, stickers, or anything to decorate with.

What to do…

1. Draw, color, stamp, add stickers, or just otherwise decorate the piece of colored construction paper.

2. Roll the paper end to end with the decorated side facing out and glue the ends together.

3. Cut the tissue paper into long strips. Glue them along the bottom and inside of your construction paper. Go all the way around the inside of the tube.

4. Punch two holes in the top of your windsock directly across from each other.

5. String your string or yarn through the holes and tie a knot at the end. Now you’re ready to hang your windsock outside for all to enjoy.
How to Make a Whirligig

A whirligig can be made from many different materials like wood or paper. It’s a spinning play thing that twists in the wind. You can make a simple one with the kids with just a few supplies.

Here’s what you need…

* A paper plate
* Scissors
* Hole punch
* String or yarn
* Things to color with (crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.)

What to do…

1. Color the paper plate. Make it a rainbow of colors. Make sure you color the entire plate.

2. Cut a spiral shape out of the plate, from the outside of the plate to the middle of it.

3. Using the hole punch, punch a hole in the middle of the plate.

4. Take the string or yarn and tie a knot in the hole you just made in the plate.

5. Now you can hang it outside or run in the wind with it and watch it twist and turn.
How to Make a Wind Chime

Who doesn’t love the gentle ping you hear from a wind chime in the wind? You could buy some really pretty ones, or you could make your own with a few things you’ll probably find lying around your home.

Here’s what you need…

* One coffee can lid
* Hammer and nail
* Several metal objects (old keys, bells, nails, safety pins, etc.)
* Heavy thread or lightweight colored string (fishing line will work)

What to do…

1. Punch several holes along the outside of the coffee can lid with the hammer and nail. Make enough holes for the objects you have collected. Punch one hole on top to hang your wind chime with.

2. Thread the thread/fishing line through the holes and tie it to the coffee can lid. Varying lengths of thread will be good.

3. Tie your metal objects to the other end of the strings. Make sure the objects will hit together when you tie them to the string.

4. Tie a string to the top hole you punched and hang your wind chime outside your window to hear the unique pings of these metal objects clanking together in the wind.

Now you can make windsocks, whirligigs, and wind chimes for your home – all fun and easy wind crafts to do with the kids.
