We tend to have preconceived notions about what foods do and do not go together. There are food combinations that are delicious, but they are not well known as pairs in our particular culture. Because of this, we may live a lifetime and never try them together. There are many odd-sounding combinations that are worth trying, though. Here are a few.
Tuna Molded Vegetable Salad
Lemon Jell-O, tuna, and celery together in one salad? This is a combination that some believe no one in their right mind would try. That is, until they themselves try it. This salad was popular a few decades ago and then faded from the limelight. However, there are many people who still enjoy whipping up a batch every now and then.
Bacon Donut
Bacon has had a recent popularity surge. It can be found on many things you would never expect. Bacon donuts have emerged recently as a perfect balance between salty and sweet. It is certainly a new and interesting way to get your quota of bacon and donuts in.
Salted Grapefruit
Grapefruits are enjoyable alone, and that is exactly how many people eat them. Some individuals like to add sugar. But there is another way to eat grapefruit, and that is with a sprinkle of salt. It is said to draw out the sweetness of the grapefruit. Try it and you will see how a little salt can make a tasty fruit even tastier.
Poutine
A unique food which is viewed as normal in Canada, poutine takes fries and heaps them with cheese curds and gravy for a deliciously unusual combo. Excellent with ketchup to dip it in, poutine will have you addicted and coming back for more in less time than it takes to say the word “eh.”
Sour Cream and Brown Sugar
These two toppings seem as though they should be used for separate dishes. However, they are delicious when mixed together as a topping for fruit. You can also keep them in separate bowls and dip strawberries first in the sour cream, then the brown sugar. Try it – it is sure to become a new favorite.
Bacon and Pancakes with Maple Syrup
This is a more traditional, though still unusual favorite food pairing. When you are eating bacon and pancakes topped with syrup, and it all runs together… it’s heavenly. Often first tried as an accident or necessity, more and more people are beginning to swirl the syrup, pancakes and bacon with intention as a regular breakfast ritual.
Chocolate, Chili Peppers, Cherries
What could possibly be better than chocolate? The answer is chocolate with chilis and cherries. This combination is rich and delightful and can be found occasionally in the candy section of the grocery store. Try it and you may begin to love chocolate even more than you do now.
Although we tend to stick with old favorites when it comes to our eating, a new idea can come along and knock us off our feet. When it comes to food pairing, it may seem like a fine art, but really just requires a bit of creativity and a very open mind. Try some of these delicious food combinations, or invent a few of your own.
